Mermaid Blue Manic Panic Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise on Unbleached Brown Hair

I don't know if anything in my life is truly ever planned out beforehand. I'm avery spontaneous person and daily life is usually fast paced and ever changing. I had this idea yesterday that I wanted to try doing turquoise in my hair. I was coming home from a doctor's appointment with my lavender blonde hair and contemplating whether or not I wanted to do it. The lavender/purple was pretty much completely out of my hair and I wanted a change because I definitely have hair ADD. I grabbedManic Panic Atomic Turquoiseand headed home for my makeover. I've got plenty of pictures and some tips inside for you if you're thinking about taking the mermaid plunge too!

I used theManic Panic Amplified Squeeze Bottle in Atomic Turquoise. I have used the regular formula which comes in a round container that you scoop out yourself, as well. I actually prefer the squeeze bottle because you can control how much color you use and it's far less messy. I also find that the Amplified formula stays in your hair longer through washes. All Manic Panic dye's are semi-permanent, vegan, and cruelty free. They will not harm your hair at all;in fact, you can sleep with the color in if you wanted to.

HOW TO GET THIS HAIR COLOR:

  1. You have to be a blonde. How blonde is entirely up to you, but just know that your results will vary depending on how light blonde your hair is. The lighter and more platinum blonde your hair is, the brighter, lighter, and truer the colors are going to be. If you have hair that is brown or dark brown, I highly suggest seeing a professional to get this step done. I'm a huge do-it-yourself gal, but there wasno wayI was getting from my dark auburn red hair to platinum blonde on my own without completely frying my hair off. I have an amazing hairdresser who used Olaplex on my hair, and we did two separate sessions 3 weeks apart to get me there. Each session lasted for several hours or more, so be prepared for the work that goes into getting your hair nice and blonde if you're dark haired. If you already have blonde hair or you have light brown hair, the process will be much easier for you and you can most likely get to your desired blonde shade within one process. There are lightening kits out there that you can use from both Sally's and the drugstore. It's up to you how much you value the health of your hair and what your budget calls for. I personally always want a professional to lighten my hair, especially because my hair is extremely long and I don't want to fry it off. Having healthy hair is important to me. The optimal level of blonde for this look is a Level 10, which is a platinum, almost white blonde. My hair was pretty much at this point in most spots, with some slightly darker (but still very blonde) pieces in my hair. This helps give the look dimension, which you'll see later in the photographs of my hair.
  2. Put on gloves and use petroleum jelly around your hair line and ears (optional). You willneed gloves for this unless you want blue stained hands for a few days. Certain shades are stronger and blue's are usually a pretty strong color that stain the skin and nails. You can also rub petroleum jelly along your hair line and ears to prevent the color from staining your skin. I usually skip this step and just try to keep the dye away from my skin and ears as much as I can. Usually a makeup remover wipe will take away any excess staining on my skin or ears.
  3. Using a bowl and a hair dye brush, mix together conditioner and Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise. Now, you technically don't have to mix the Manic Panic with conditioner, but because this shade is so bright and intense, I wanted my result to be slightly pastel looking. I wanted bright, but also light, so I diluted the color. Believe it or not, this color is so intense that I achieved my results with 1 cup of conditioner to 2 tablespoons of Atomic Turquoise. Mix them together well in your bowl.
  4. Apply to your hair in sections.I like to apply the color to my hair in sections, starting at the roots and working my way down. This dye is semi-permanent, so it will wash out and fade after a certain number of washes. You don't need to be absolutely perfect with your application and I even massage the color in like I am using shampoo to make sure my entire head is saturated. Once it's completely covered in dye, I wrap my head up in a disposable hair cap and wait.
  5. Rinse your hair out after 30 minutes or more. You can literally sleep in this dye if you wanted to! It doesn't harm your hair at all. I left mine in for about an hour because the hair cap was itchy and pinching my face. I rinsed my hair incold water and made sure the water went clear before stopping. It's really important to try to use cold water only when washing your hair with color in it. It will keep the hair cuticle from opening up and bleeding out the color.

THE FINISHED RESULTS:

You can see the "dimension" I was talking about earlier in my hair. This is a direct result of my blonde hair being different shades of blonde, with some of them being lighter and some of them being darker. It adds a nice natural "highlighted" look when you apply the Atomic Turquoise. Some pieces are more blue and some pieces are lighter and more mint green. The effect is pretty.

I was actuallyreally surprised at how much I loved this color on me versus the purple. Purple is my favorite color ever, so I was really excited about the purple and lavender in my hair. However, after achieving this shade, I think this one is much more flattering against my skin tone and eyes than the purple! This one makes my skin tone really glow and look healthy, even when I'm not wearing any makeup.

I feel like a bona fide mermaid now!

You can purchaseManic Panic Amplified Atomic Turquoiseonline on their website, as well as at Hot Topic stores nationwide (where I found mine). At Hot Topic, the bottle I purchased was $12.99USD. There is still plenty left for when I need to touch the color up the next few times! A great tip to make your Manic Panic dye last longer if you have long hair like mine is to dilute a couple of tablespoons in a cup of conditioner like I did. My results did not come out super light or pastel at all, even with the dilution, and it's a wonderful way to stretch the life of your hair dye out.

As I shampoo my hair, the color will slowly fade and change. With the purple, my hair faded back to platinum blonde completely within a couple of weeks. It's a really fun way to play with color and change it up often. I haven't had a chance to see how this specific shade will fade yet. If you follow me on Instagram, I'll keep you updated on how long it lasts and what it looks like as it fades!
